About Exhibition

Grove Collective is pleased to present the upcoming two-artist exhibition New in Town/Welcome Back, featuring German artists Jonas Mayer and Fabian Warnsing, on view both at Grove Collective’s pop-up location at Auguststr. 35, Berlin, and online in virtual reality through the Grove Collective website. This is the first time that these artists have exhibited together and marks the first time that Grove Collective has worked with either Mayer or Warnsing.

Embedded in the very foundation of this exhibition is the marrying of familiar and new; the comfortable and the adventurous. At its most granular, the works on display exemplify this, with Mayer’s and Warnsing’s familiar styles re-contextualised by an unlikely pairing; Mayer’s stolid, modernist forms are given contemporary vigour by Warnsing’s works, while Mayer historicises many of Warnsing’s motifs. In turn, Mayer’s foray into sculpture provides another axis on which to chart the exhibition, creating an air of experimentation into which both artists are cast.

However, this pairing of new and familiar extends further, into personal territory while Warnsing lives and works in Berlin, Mayer works in Saarbrücken, Germany, leaving Warnsing as the local and Mayer as the newcomer. Similarly, New in Town/Welcome Back celebrates a return to Berlin for Grove Collective Co-Directors Jacob Barnes and Morgane Wagner the city where both met while still attending university, but to which both return anew as professionals.

For Grove Collective, this marks the first in-person pop-up event held outside of London, as well as one of two exhibitions staged in Berlin this summer. While working across media in a variety of locations has been a trademark of the gallery’s exhibitional practice to date, New in Town/Welcome Back proves the most ambitious project to date, introducing the gallery to an international viewership at a time when dialogue through art across international borders is both difficult and necessary.

Grounded in the firm belief that the art world must reflect an increasingly globalized marketplace, Grove Collective was established as a means to actualize a collective conception of what the art world can become when it works to benefit increasingly exciting and active new markets, not only an established collectorship. In doing so, the gallery exhibits exciting work from around the world, easing bottlenecks that prevent artists from selling their work, and making art from a diverse range of practitioners available to an equally diverse collector base.
